Oral Sedation in Richmond
A Calmer Way to Approach Your Visit
Dental appointments can feel overwhelming for many people—especially if you’ve had a past experience that left you uneasy. Oral sedation offers a way to reduce anxiety without putting you to sleep. It’s taken by mouth before your appointment, helping you stay calm and comfortable from the moment you arrive.
What to Expect With Oral Sedation
You’ll be prescribed a small dose of anti-anxiety medication to take before your visit—usually about an hour in advance. By the time you reach the clinic, you’ll likely feel more relaxed, possibly a little drowsy. While you’ll remain awake during your appointment, many patients remember very little of the visit afterward.
When It May Be a Good Option
Oral sedation is often helpful for patients who feel nervous about dental procedures, have a strong gag reflex, or require multiple treatments in one visit. It may also be recommended if you’ve had difficulty staying still or relaxed in the chair in the past. We’ll talk with you ahead of time to make sure it’s a safe option based on your health and any medications you’re taking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I fall asleep?
No—you’ll stay conscious and able to respond, but you may feel groggy or spaced out.
Is it safe for everyone?
It’s considered safe for most healthy adults. We’ll always review your medical history first and answer any questions you may have.
Can I drive myself afterward?
No. You’ll need someone to bring you to the clinic and pick you up when your appointment is over.
How long will the effects last?
You may feel drowsy for several hours. We recommend going home to rest and taking the day off from work or school.
Will I be able to eat before my appointment?
That depends on the timing and medication. We’ll let you know exactly what to do before your visit.
